I have been sewing since I was around 6, I had made my first outfit since I was about 9 and I don’t think I’ve ever stopped. My mother is totally responsible for my passion for sewing, having lit the fire in me at such a young age and teaching me everything she knew.
I then went on to study Fashion Design at Solent University in Southampton and have never really looked back. My degree taught me so many skills and really helped me to unlock a really technical side to sewing, learning to pattern cut was an absolute revelation and it’s still one of my favourite things to do.
Crafting is something I have always done along side the sewing, whether it be knitting and crochet, lace making (taught by my incredible grandmother), painting, mosaics, macrame plant hangers (I could go on and on) I just absolutely love to create.
I began to teach after I left University, and after finding the mainstream school curriculum too restrictive I found my way into teaching private workshops from Sew Creative in Petersfield. Teaching in this environment has enabled me to teach so many talented sewists, crafters, quilters and all round creatives but most importantly its enabled me to teach practical sewing skills for the love of the art rather than for any higher purpose. I love passing on my knowledge, tips, tricks and the odd hack or too it really does bring me an incredible amount of joy… especially when beaming proud faces show me their finished make at the end.
Since becoming a sewing tutor I have also been brought in to teach at private schools and work one-to-one with both children and adults to help progress a love of the arts and/or develop specific skills.
I am also a very proud Mummy to 3 beautiful children (and 1 lunatic dog). They find my sewing studio fascinating and take any opportunity to be in there with me, whether its to just press all the buttons on my sewing machine, rummage through my button jars or actually make something with me. They’re all incredibly small at the moment but I cannot wait to be able to teach them to sew and craft in the way my mum did with me.
