After 2 months of crocheting and 278 flowers later the Daisy Chain Dress by Realm Designs is finally finished! I am as in love with it as I thought I would be. I'm excited to try it over lots of other pieces from my wardrobe, it's a really fun styling piece. I used a 4mm hook and cotton Paintbox yarn in aran weight (the pattern calls for dk but the stylecraft I had in my stash was a more similar thickness to the Aran than the Paintbox dk so I went with it) I used around 15 balls to get it to this size and length. #crochetersoftiktok #crochetproject #crochetflowers
Happy World Book Day! I know the dressing up for it is a bit like marmite but we love bringing the books to life and their whole school gets really involved so it's a fun day. I try to keep costumes as pieces that can be mixed and matched so they get more use out of it, last year's dragon wings for example have been worn many a time when they're playing and I'm sure my daughter will wear this dress many a time over. I self drafted her dress using another dress of hers as a size guide and then put a half circle skirt on. The fabric is Hello Spring Spots in Lilac from Makower with some pink satin from my stash for the sash. The Balaclava/hood is a free pattern from Yarnspirations it's the Red Cozy Crochet Ribbed Hood Pattern (and it's a fab make even without the tentacles). I used 3 balls of the King Cole Big Value in wine. The mini slug pattern is from Etsy by VliegendeHollander in some dk from my stash. I then just used some mount board and a small piece of wood for the sign. I find with costumes if you can just create a few details so that they feel they look like what you're aiming for it'll be a winner.
Now I'm calling it pattern matching but these side seams aren't straight so we won't get a true matchup/invisible seam on the sides so what I'm trying to do here is line up the horizontal stripes because if you didn't it would look weird. I know a lot of people avoid fabrics like this because you have to do this so I'm hoping these tips will have you wanting to give it a go. This beautiful fabric is from Fabric Godmother and it's a brushed cotton mix coating. I purchased this piece from Sew Creative Petersfield. Now even though the fabric description has it down as a coating I think it's going to make the most amazing Ally Shift Dress so that's what I'm making, and I've been working on a sleeve pattern for it so my plan is to try out one of those too.
Sometimes all you need is a needle, some thread and an hour of peace and quiet. Now I'm using the wrong stabiliser here (although fortunately at least it worked) but what you want is a water soluble embroidery stabiliser. I've seen some that even stick on which would have made this even easier. Choosing the right embroidery stabiliser is half the battle to making these sorts of jobs easier and there are so many options out there.
I needed a new crochet project to keep my restless hands at bay and then remembered seeing the beautiful Daisy Chain Dress from Realm Designs... so to start this year that's the project on my lap. Its mid February, so i'm weaving in some of the many many ends on this project and giving you a progress update on where i'm at. I think i'm probably off pace and running a little slower than i aimed for but it is what it i, i'll try and get myself back on pace next week.
I'm starting a New Series where I'm going to throw a spanner into some of the rules/myths/theories that you may have been previously taught. Episode 2 is about pressing seams... because contrary to belief you don't have to always press your seams open. In fact, there are lots of occasions where you're better off not pressing them open and instead pressing them to one side is better. Now, Quilters please don't come at me I'm aware that pressing open to reduce bulk is often your best bet to get a clean flat finish but interlocking side pressing can be super helpful even in quilting. But I believe if you're going to default to any type of pressing rule (and remember there are always exceptions to rules) then your best bet is press them to together and to the front.
